Lewington had a four-year spell as manager of the club in the 80s and was also caretaker following Lawrie Sanchez's sacking in 2007.
The 53-year-old marked the start of his second caretaker spell with an easy 5-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday night, but insists that he is not interested in taking on the job permanently.
He said: "I'm not interested in the job, it's going to an outsider. Which is fair enough. I think it can be very dangerous to bring up coaches who are familiar with players.
"So we're all accepting that an outsider's going to come in and we're just waiting to see who it is."
