"Lawrie's current contract ends at the end of the current European Championship," Irish FA president Jim Boyce told Sky Sports News.
"It is no secret Northern Ireland would love Lawrie to continue and it is no secret that we want to have contractual discussions with Lawrie.
"I can assure fans of Northern Ireland and I am sure Lawrie will confirm that he would love to guide Northern Ireland to our first major championship since the World Cup in 1986.
"We have had informal discussions, as we would with anyone, and we have an excellent relationship with Lawrie.
"Everyone in Northern Ireland thinks the world of Lawrie, he has put this country on the map and I hope things can be resolved, but we wish Lawrie every success in the five games at Fulham."
