Boa Morte won the game when he was left with the freedom of the box to plant his shot into the corner, just after Malbranque had rounded the keeper to stroke the ball home.

However, if the first half had belonged to the Londoners, the second was most certainly Dinamo Zagreb's. Just after half time, Ivica Olic latched on to a deep cross to nod back across the keeper and in.

However it would have been harsh on Fulham had they got nothing from the tie. The first half was almost exclusively reserved for their attacks.

Sylvain Legwinski and Lee Clark both had long-range shots which flew wide, but it was Boa Morte who spurned the first real opportunity.

On 20 minutes, Clark sprang the offside trap to release the Portuguese down the right. As he cut in, Boa Morte tried to trick the keeper but only ended up bringing a save out of Ivan Turina at his near post.

Dario Smoje was grateful the card shown to him was only yellow after a crude challenge on the edge of the box deprived Clark from a one to one with the keeper.

Dimitru Mitu's long-range effort then flew through the teaming rain and although Edwin Van der Sar elected to punch to his right, the Dutch keeper always had the shot covered.

Just before the break, Boa Morte's low cross was inches past the outstretched foot of Facundo Sava but Smoje, who did get a touch, was lucky not to slice into his own net.

Olic's goal prompted a Croatian revival and Rufus Brevett came to the rescue after 76 minutes when he stole the ball off the toes of Bosko Balaban and Mitu's follow-up needed a fist away from Van der Sar.

For all that, Fulham should have levelled before they did on 83 minutes when Bjarne Goldbaek's cross was weakly headed wide from Boa Morte, but his embarrassment turned to joy just seconds before the final whistle.
