The first half was a stop start affair, punctuated by a flurry of goals. Hajduk pulled the tie back to evens when the free-kick from Vlatko Dolonga took a wicked deflection off Sean Davis to complete wrong-foot the keeper.

Steve Marlet could have already scored but made no mistake after 20 minutes when Steed Malbranque played a clever pass for Facundo Sava to touch on for Marlet who sidefooted home from five yards.

The Frenchman should have given Stipe Pletikosa no chance after 28 minutes following a deft chip from Luis Boa Morte, but the ball was hit at a comfortable height and brought sharp reflex save from the keeper.

At the other end Edwin Van der Sar was helpless to do anything about Hajduk's second. Mario Carevic's corner was met by Hrvoje Vejic who powered a fierce downward header in from six yards.

The Croatians lead lasted only three minutes although it took nerves of steel from Malbranque to put Fulham back in the overall lead.

Malbranque chose the other corner for his second attempt but it still found the back of the net.

In the second half Fulham increased the pressure and Davis should have broken the net after 66 minutes when he was unmarked seven yards out, but wasted Marlet's fine cross by sidefooting woefully wide.

In the last five minutes Fulham hearts were in their mouths when first Zat Knight inexplicably allowed a cross to go past him and cause havoc in the box and then Inamoto proved to be the coolest man in the ground when he denied Split their final chance.
