The first shot on goal arrived in the 22nd minute, with Michael Hartmann shooting weakly straight at Edwin Van der Sar from distance.
Six minutes later Hertha took the lead as Marcelinho's right-wing corner was headed home at the near post by former Aston Villa midfielder Stefan Beinlich.
Brazilian forward Marcelinho had the next effort on goal ten minutes before the break, but his shot was easily dealt with by Van der Sar.
The Cottagers for their part made few openings, with Steed Malbranque having their only effort on target.
However, eight minutes after the restart the visitors drew level as Malbranque's cross was headed against the woodwork by Martin Djetou and Steve Marlet was on hand to head home the rebound from close range.
Just after the hour, Beinlich headed over with Marcelinho well placed behind him and on 68 minutes Hertha took a 2-1 lead as Facundo Sava sliced the ball into his own net from Marcelinho's free-kick.
Twelve minutes from time Van der Sar made a superb block at his near post after Marcelinho had volleyed goalwards from a deep cross by Bart Goor.
Three minutes further on Marlet headed straight at Kiraly from 12 yards out and Steve Finnan's last-minute drive was the last chance of the game.
